Abigail Sooknarine

Youth Support Worker

The Core Youth Centre

I started at Youth Unlimited during my practicum for my degree in Social Work. Upon finishing my practicum, I was asked to join the team. Two years later, and I still love the amazing work I get to be a part of.

I work at The Core drop-in centre on the south side of Edmonton. At the centre, I engage with youth through mentorship, games, arts and crafts, and conversations that help build trust and connection. I help create a safe and welcoming space by listening to youth, supporting them, and ensuring they feel a sense of belonging.

Every young person deserves a community that truly listens and cares. A space where youth can be themselves without judgment and shame. Working here allows me to walk alongside young people as they grow, learn, and navigate life's challenges. Growing up, I wish I had a space like The Core to build a sense of belonging and have adults who listened to my issues without judgment and who genuinely cared about me. Therefore, I understand the importance of having someone who believes in you and just how much of an impact that can have on a youth’s life. This role lets me be that person for others.

When I’m not at the drop-in, I enjoy reading, taking dance classes, singing karaoke with friends, discovering new cafes and restaurants with family and friends, travelling, and going on nature walks.
